I’m sure your wondering what should a Christian woman always wear. Well beloved Colossians 3 makes it plain and clear, just an FYI I’m not talking about clothes. So while you’re here keep reading to find out how to always stay in style.
I have to admit I love to look good I believe my clothes tell a story about me and usually how I’m feeling. I’m always dressed appropriately for every occasion, but there are times were my outer appearance doesn’t match my hideous attitude the frustrations of my day to day have a part to play but what does it truly say about me. No matter what I should never forget to wear the most important things and they would be.
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
As a woman of God I should never go without a few accessories. In agreement with the verse we should always wear compassion (mercies), kindness, humility (humbleness), gentleness (meekness) patience (longsuffering), forgiveness, and love. We are Gods people “holy and dearly loved” and we should live our lives accordingly.
So I want to look at each characteristic of what a fashionable WOG looks like and how we should wear these traits.
What do you think when you hear the word compassion?
When I hear the word compassion I immediately begin to think of someone else that may be going through a rough time. So for me it takes away any focus I would have of my own situation to think of someone else’s. Paul simply begins describing attributes that are to be fruit of the gospel in our lives as believers. Having compassion isn’t always easy to do so the best practice for compassion of others is to start having compassion for self. God is compassionate as should we be.
Psalm 116:5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.
Compassion is cognizance and the caring of needs and kindness is acting out on the compassion we feel. Not only can we act out our kindness but our words have so much power to manifest kindness as well. Let’s take a look at the Proverbs 31 woman who “opens her arms to the poor and extends her hand to the needy.” She is a model of Proverbs 11:16 which says, “a kindhearted woman gains honor.” A woman who is kind can have a big influence on the people around her.
Proverbs 12:25 “Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.”
As a WOG we should never be out for honor or exaltation but of a humble spirit. In Philippians 2:3-5 it says this “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory(vanity); but in the lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. So what this says is because Jesus humbled himself we also need to humble ourselves. Having humility can go against everything in us and surely against the way of the word. The wonderful thing in staying humble is that God will exalt you as he sees fit James 4:10 “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
GENTLENESS & PATIENCE Meekness& Longsuffering
When there is a true sense of humility you will not have a difficult time being gentle and patient. The reason for this is because your expectations will not be as high. Gentleness is a trait that comes from the heart and soul. A truly gentle person gives of themselves, and they empathize with others. They establish peace and a calmness to themselves. Having humility will bring out the virtue of patience which will allow one to have self restraint and not giving into one’s anger, even in the face of difficulties. We become more like Christ, who was gentle though all-powerful, and patient though perfect.
James 1:2-3 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Proverbs 15:1 A soft (gentle) answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
Forgiveness is important and a requirement that God commands us of to do. Why is it so hard and why can’t we get over it, its simple because were human. Then Peter came to him and said, “Lord how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” Matthew 18:21-22. So what does that mean that we have to keep forgiving? Yes, over and over because God forgives us in the same capacity the mercies that God gives us we have to give that same mercy back. And there are no caveats such as “if,” “but,” or “unless.” As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12. So God forgives us completely and you know what’s the best part he forgets them as if they never existed. “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” Hebrews 8:12. How am I supposed to forgive like that? Forgiveness is not a feeling but a choice. Its choosing not to let hatred rule in your heart. Its choosing to go to God for help and comfort instead of dwelling on the past even when you don’t want to.” When he was reviled, did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously.” 1 Peter 2:23. So as hard as it may be choose to forgive.
You see, without love, none of the other items we’re wearing are worth very much. Its like wearing fake jewelry, it may have a little sparkle and catch a a few glimpse but they wont hold up close to an inspection. “Though I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”1 Corinthians 13:1-3. Love is more than an emotion, its who we are because its who he is. Having love is a mark of our faith. So if you don’t have love in your heart everything you do and say means nothing. Above all the accessories we have to put on love is the one we should never leave home without.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. John 13:35
